With an eye toward combatting opioid abuse, Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) is in favor of required safety training for doctors who prescribe the drugs to patients for pain management. Prescriptions for painkillers, including Morphine, Tramadol, Oxycodone, and Methadone, have risen over the past decade, and have been known to lead to crossover street drugs like heroin.
“Ohio is ground-zero for the heroin epidemic. Curbing the misuse and over-prescription of opioids would be a markedly important step in the fight against prescription drug and opioid abuse,” Portman told the Herald. “I support efforts to increase training for doctors who prescribe opioids so that we can stop this crisis where it so often begins, with a prescription.”
The Food and Drug Administration is considering whether to make it a requirement for prescribing physicians to attend drug safety training courses. Currently, safety training is voluntary for physicians and are funded by the drug makers.
