Parents’ heroin addictions put too many kids in foster care

BLUE CREEK, Ohio — The family homestead is remote, its long, dirt-and-gravel driveway cutting deep into the Appalachian countryside. Suzanne Valle hangs a sign on the mailbox because first-time visitors often miss the turn.

Doesn't matter how many days or weeks have passed since the last child's birthday bash, Valle figures. That kids can live and play and heal on her sprawling property is reason alone to celebrate.

"I had 11 over the weekend," said Valle, a foster parent in southern Ohio's Adams County. "It was an emergency."
