Ohioans are becoming all too familiar with the heroin and prescription opioid abuse crisis in our communities and state. We either see the endless stories of addiction in the news or, far worse, watch it unfold in our homes and our neighborhoods. As a physician who treats men and women in the grips of addiction, I see how state policy influences the way patients are treated, for better and for worse.

One of the toughest moments a family doctor can face is prescribing an addiction treatment such as buprenorphine and wondering whether the patient will actually take it as directed.

Sadly, this scenario plays out too often in Ohio as patients increasingly sell their prescription on the black market, a sinister phenomenon called diversion.
